href="https://www.corporatecrimereporter.com/news/200/charles-derber-sociopathic-society/">Sociopathic Society where the wealth disparity in this country now exceeds that of the Gilded Age. These institutions have programmed us from birth to be mindless consumers of "stuff," including misinformation. Mass media are now dominated by ultra-wealthy con-men typified by Trump (“Truth” Social), Musk (X), and Murdock (Fox), etc., who manipulate the poorly informed and deliberately misinformed to vote against their own and our larger societal interests.

As a result we live in a materialistic sociopathic culture that prioritizes self-interest over societal interest – and more dangerously the health of the planet necessary for our children. It's about instant gratification and "who wants to be a millionaire." It creates fear of the "other," like "invading" migrants looking to improve their own desperately poor lives allegedly at the in-group's (and their cats and dogs) expense. What do MAGA voters think will happen to food prices when all these millions of “boogeyman” are mass-deported? Who’s going to pay for it – Mexico?

We can't pass an equal rights amendment for women, let alone elect a smarter-than-they-are mixed-race woman to be President. Apparently some black and Latino men, and most white old men and entitled young "bros" can't handle it. They’d rather have an unqualified bro-foon – despite his ignorance, racism, misogyny, grifting, felonies, and other clear defects as a human being – be their President.

Despite a post-pandemic economy better than any other in the world and wages outpacing inflation, MAGA voters are too ignorant to know the price of eggs or gas won't change due to electing Trump. They're in for a rude awakening when the perpetual Republican priority of cutting taxes mostly benefiting the wealthy balloons the deficit even more than in Trump’s first term, and is used – as it always is by Republicans since Roosevelt’s New Deal – as an excuse to cut Social Security and Medicare for working people.

Big business and industry will be more deregulated – ensuring public health and the environment are further harmed in order to let the rich get even richer. They’ll be laughing at MAGA morons all the way to the bank.

Thanks for reading Democratic Perspectives! The Electoral College’s pivotal role is defined Constitutionally with clear powers and limitations, particularly concerning its ability to not approve a presidential election result.

The Electoral College was established by the U.S. Constitution in Article II, Section 1, and further refined by the 12th Amendment. It consists of 538 electors, with each state allotted a number of electors equal to its total number of Senators and Representatives in Congress. The District of Columbia is also allocated three electors. The primary function of the Electoral College is to formally cast votes, after the General Election, to affirm the President and Vice President of the United States based on the popular vote results within each state.

Electors are chosen by political parties at state conventions or by a vote of the party's central committee. Once selected, electors meet in their respective states in December 17, 2024 after the general election to cast their votes. These votes are then transmitted to the President of the Senate, who announces the results in a joint session of Congress held in January.

The expectation is that electors will vote in accordance with the popular vote results of their state. However, there is no federal law mandating this, and instances of "faithless electors" who vote contrary to the popular vote have occurred, though they have never affected the outcome of a presidential election.

An example occurred in 2016 to prevent Trump’s election, but did not gain traction. Because Trump is now a clear and present danger, more electors could vote against Trump—that’s our last defence against Trump’s election, so write elector’s, asking them to vote against Trump’s election.

Whether the Electoral College members can vote to not approve a presidential election result is dependent on state laws, the constitutional framework, and federal statutes. Some states have varying laws that bind electors to vote according to the state's popular vote. In July 2020, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of state laws that penalize or replace faithless electors (Chiafalo v. Washington).

Although unlikely, Americans have a narrow path to prevent our democracy from devolving to a lawless dictator who embraces fascism, the dissolution of the U.S. Constitution, and our rights and protections. It all depends on whether members of the Electoral College understand that Trump is unfit for office, not constrained by their state’s laws, and whether they are patriots who support the U.S. Constitution, our democratic republic, and the rule of law.

Thanks for reading Democratic Perspectives! Often referred to as "swing states," these pivotal regions can determine the outcome of U.S. elections. This essay delves into the reasons they are so crucial in the electoral process.

What is a battleground state? Battleground states are those states in which neither major political party holds a decisive advantage, making them highly competitive, unpredictable, and won with a razor-thin majority vote. Unlike states that consistently have a majority vote for a particular party, such as California, battleground states can swing either way, hence the term "swing states."

Historically, battleground states have consistently shown substantial and unpredictable fluctuation between parties across different elections. This unpredictability makes them highly contested in every electoral cycle.

Apropos of the 2024 election, in the 2016 election, Donald Trump's victories in battleground states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin were pivotal to his success. These states, which had previously tenuously leaned Democratic in presidential elections, swung in favor of Trump, contributing to his electoral college victory despite Hillary Clinton winning the popular vote by nearly three million votes.

The Influence of Battleground States on the Electoral College. The Electoral College is a unique element of the American political system that plays a crucial role in determining the outcome of presidential elections. Battleground states as a whole have often produced surprise outcomes of presidential races due to their unpredictable voting patterns and their significant number of combined electoral votes.

The Electoral College comprises electors from each state, equal to the total number of its Congressional delegation: Its number of Representatives plus its two Senators. Hence, the total number of electors for all states is 538, and a candidate needs a majority of 270 electoral votes to win the presidency. This system amplifies the importance of winning individual states, with the exception of the battleground states.

For example California, the most populous state with the fifth largest economy in the world, only has 54 electoral votes. The battleground states have a combined total of 140. Whereas California has always predictably voted Democratic by a wide margin, the battleground state’s always have a razor-thin and unpredicatable partisan majority. Traditional battleground states include Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Georgia, North Carolina, Arizona, Nevada, Florida, and Ohio. In 2024, the first seven in the foregoing list comprise the critical battleground states.

Hence, the nine battleground states combined represent a disportionate number of electoral votes, collectively representing a substantial portion (51.9%) of the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency.

Consequently, POTUS candidates prioritize these states in their campaign strategies, investing considerable time, resources, and attention to sway undecided voters. Hillary Clinton’s 2016 didn’t focus enough on the battleground states. In contrast the Harris-Walz 2024 campaign has focused historically large financial resources: For speeches at huge rallys, interviews and townhalls, broadcast and social media ads, and trained canvassers.

Due to their potential to tip the tenuously balanced scales, battleground states receive a disproportionate share of campaign resources. This includes financial investments in advertising, frequent candidate visits, and extensive ground game operations. The goal is to mobilize voters, ensure high turnout among supporters, and persuade undecided or swing voters to cast their ballots in favor of a particular candidate.

Candidates often tailor their policy messages to appeal to the specific interests and concerns of battleground state voters. For example, in states with significant agricultural or manufacturing sectors, candidates might emphasize policies related to trade, jobs, and economic growth. Advancements in data analytics and digital campaigning are also changing the way campaigns engage with battleground states. Micro-targeting of voters through social media, sophisticated polling, and real-time data analysis enable campaigns to fine-tune their strategies and respond swiftly to changing dynamics on the ground. This targeted approach resonates with key demographics and addresses local issues that could influence voter decisions.

The influence of battleground states has fueled ongoing debates about the fairness and appropriateness of the Electoral College system. Critics argue that a direct national popular vote would be a more democratic method of electing the president, ensuring that every vote carries equal weight regardless of geographic location. Proponents of the Electoral College, however, contend that it balances the interests of smaller states and prevents candidates from only focusing on populous urban areas.

Thanks for reading Democratic Perspectives! Remember Trump’s Republican tax cuts that benefitted the wealthy and, by the Congressional Budget Office’s (CBO) estimate, cost the government $1.9 trillion before it expires in 2025? That’s a big deficit Republicans don’t want to talk about, but they do say they want to cut Social Security, healthcare, food assistance programs, and more that your taxes make possible.

Now the CBO’s new estimate of cost to keep Trump’s tax cut in place over the next decade: $4.6 trillion. In April Trump told donors he plans to extend the tax cuts, and Republican legislators in Congress are agreeing to that extension. That means working and middle class families carry the tax burden when the wealthy do not pay their fair share. Shows Republicans have little regard for the actual deficit and working people.

Instead, consider Biden and Democrats’ plans: no extension of tax cuts, but implementing tax rates that would increase for those making over $400,000 and a corporate minimum tax of 21% that would end big corporations paying little or nothing. Other provisions would make the tax system fairer—benefitting everyday workers and families. American Enterprise Institute found that Biden’s changes would result in $3.8 trillion in revenue increases, not $4.6 trillion deficit with Trump’s extension.

Also, under Biden and Democrat’s enacted policies (for example: American Rescue Plan, and CHIPS & Science Act) there is substantial increase in new businesses and jobs.

Quiz time. Republican wealthy tax cuts: $4.6 trillion deficit and program cuts or Democrat fair tax plan: $3.8 trillion for important programs for all people, reduce deficit.

Your answer: vote for numbers that benefit you. The math is clear.

Stop Project 2025. Save our democracy, rights, and freedom. electoral process, and the peaceful transfer of power, are well documented, let us not forget that his real economic policies favor the rich. Those policies include keeping the massive tax cut for them with crumbs for the rest of us, that was his main accomplishment in his first term.

Also well documented is the massive transfer of wealth to the already wealthy, our very own oligarchs, ever since Reagan helped jumpstart trickle down economics. The rich want to keep that money spigot flowing their way, which is why Elon Musk and his ilk are supporting Trump. These wanna-be oligarchs haven’t learned the history lesson that if you create an autocratic system, you are then at the mercy of the whims of your fearless leader. And we’ve seen that Trump's demands for loyalty only go in one direction—towards him!

In Washington State, we have our own rich guy, Brian Heywood, who has funded four initiatives to keep that spigot flowing upward (I-2109,I-2117,I-2124, and I-2166). All are designed to take away things that will benefit the many to enrich the few. Vote NO on them all.

The Harris/Walz ticket and the Democrats want to challenge Trump’s “socialism for the rich” mentality, and provide more avenues for wealth building among the shrinking middle class. Those avenues include: adding living-wage jobs, increasing manufacturing, assistance in childcare, in starting small businesses, in building housing, and in being able to afford those houses once built. Home ownership is a big step towards building generational wealth, a step that has been denied to many in our country. with a new book which reveals more on Trump’s well documented cozy relationship with Vladimir Putin. New revelations: 1) Trump secretly sent very scarce COVID testing equipment to Putin. 2) After leaving office, Trump has secretly talked directly to Putin as many as seven times.

Woodward has impeccable credentials. Trump is a well-established pathological liar – and predictably attacked Woodward’s veracity and character:

“None of these made up stories by Bob Woodward are true and are the work of a truly demented and deranged man who suffers from a debilitating case of Trump Derangement Syndrome. Woodward is an angry, little man... a total sleazebag who has lost it mentally, and he's slow, lethargic, incompetent and overall a boring person with no personality.”

Trump “doth protest too much,” and there’s no better example of narcissistic projection – Trump’s accusations are a reflection of himself.

As Kamala Harris states, “Trump has this desire to be a dictator. He admires strongmen and he gets played by them because he thinks that they're his friends, and they are manipulating him full time by flattery and with favor.”

Is Putin's power over Trump just a case of a former KGB master manipulator playing a useful idiot like a violin? Or is it a possible blackmail Russian prostitute rendezvous tape, promises of Trump Tower Moscow, or something else? One thing is certain: if Trump is reelected, besides losing our own democracy, wannabe dictator Trump will re-assume his position as Putin's No. 1 lap dog. At that point, you can kiss our NATO allies goodbye, and buy new world maps without Ukraine on them.

Stop Project 2025. Biden-Harris Administration (Biden-Harris) achieved major results at home and abroad in less than four years – results that benefit all of us.

Biden-Harris drove the passage of the hugely impactful Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), Infrastructure Bill; the CHIPS and Science Act, which assures critical semiconductors are made in America. They established the Council on Supply Chain Resilience to reduce future disruptions similar to the pandemic. They encouraged the highest U.S. oil production in history, which lowered gas pump prices. Biden-Harris has bragging rights on the extraordinarily successful economy. And, with Biden-Harris’s acceleration of clean energy production, renewable power is setting record highs, while violent crime is the lowest in fifty years. Biden-Harris’s team put COVID safety nets in place, rebuilt US diplomacy, rejoined the Paris climate accords, affirmed our strong NATO alliance, and encouraged a new Asian NATO. These are just a few of Biden-Harris’s many accomplishments. And there’s more: Thirty Biden-Harris accomplishments you might have missed, and even more successes summarized by The White House.

The media under-reported these Biden-Harris Administration accomplishments, and virtually did not report on Harris’ significant and many contributions. This led to widespread unawareness of the substantial, and significant benefits for Americans that were achieved by the Biden-Harris administration.

Biden-Harris strengthened America, domestically and internationally; and continues to strengthen our democratic republic, while working to unify the nation.

Highlights of Harris’ contributions to the Biden-Harris Administration

Her tenure in the Biden-Harris administration has been marked by significant contributions across various sectors, leveraging her extensive experience in law and public service to address critical issues facing the nation.

Women's Rights and Gender Equality. Vice President Harris has consistently championed women's rights and gender equality for decades. She has advocated for policies that support reproductive health, pay equity, and workplace protections for women. Harris has also highlighted the importance of addressing gender-based violence and ensuring that women have equal opportunities to thrive in all sectors of society.

Pandemic Leadership. Her leadership, as a part of the Biden-Harris pandemic response, played a pivotal role in the administration's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. She acted as a strong advocate for equitable vaccine distribution, particularly focusing on underserved and minority communities. Harris has worked closely with health officials and community leaders to promote vaccine confidence and accessibility, ensuring that the most vulnerable populations are not left behind.

Focus on Immigration Reform. Harris has been instrumental in leading efforts to address the root causes of migration from Central America, such as economic instability, violence, and corruption. Her diplomatic engagements with leaders from Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador have aimed to foster regional cooperation and create sustainable solutions that address the complex factors driving migration.

Advocacy for Voting Rights. As a staunch defender of voting rights, Vice President Harris has championed efforts to protect and expand access to the ballot box. She has actively supported legislation such as the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. Harris has also worked to mobilize voters, emphasizing the importance of civic engagement and the need to safeguard democratic processes.

Economic Initiatives. Harris has been a key figure in promoting economic recovery and growth, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. She has advocated for policies aimed at supporting small businesses, increasing access to capital for minority-owned enterprises, and advancing workforce development programs. Her initiatives have focused on creating equitable economic opportunities and addressing systemic inequalities.

Climate Change and Environmental Justice. Harris has prioritized climate change mitigation and its disproportionate impact on low-income and minority communities. She has supported the administration's ambitious climate agenda, which includes rejoining the Paris Agreement, investing in clean energy, and promoting environmental justice. For over a decade, Harris has emphasized the need for comprehensive strategies that address both environmental sustainability and social equity.

Criminal Justice Reform. Drawing on her background as a former prosecutor, Harris has been a long-time vocal advocate for criminal justice reform. She has proposed and supported measures aimed at reducing mass incarceration, addressing racial disparities in the justice system, and working to assure police accountability. Her efforts have contributed to the administration's broader agenda of advancing fairness and equity within the criminal justice system.

Safe and Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Vice President Harris is establishing policy to mitigate risks, harness the benefits of AI, and protect Americans' privacy: Harris announced a series of new U.S. initiatives to advance AI safety and responsibility during her visit to the United Kingdom in November 2023. She has been working with the private sector, and other governments to manage the risks posed by AI. Notably, she has received major voluntary commitments from leading U.S. AI companies to ensure responsible AI innovation. Furthermore, Vice President Harris announced a new policy from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to advance governance, innovation, and risk management in federal agencies’ use of AI.

Kamala Harris' accomplishments in the Biden-Harris administration reflect her commitment to justice, equity, and progress. Her leadership has been instrumental in addressing some of the most pressing challenges facing the nation, from public health and economic recovery to immigration reform and climate change.

If elected, President Harris will continue the work needed, as decribed on her campaign site, to solve the most pressing challenges facing the nation and internationally, to assure American economic stength, and to pave the way for future generations of leaders.

It’s not a partisan choice. It’s clear that Kamala Harris has the experience and bearing to be President of the United States.

Nonetheless, there’s more to learn about her experience, contributions to the Biden-Harris Administration, and her planned Administration focus and policies, if elected.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Healthcare. Harris is focused on making healthcare more accessible and affordable, particularly for vulnerable populations. She has proposed expanding Medicare to cover in-home senior care, aiming to help the "sandwich generation" of adults caring for aging parents while raising their children. Harris supported the Mission Act, expanding healthcare system for Veterans.

Vice President Harris is establishing A.I. policy to mitigate risks, harness the benefits of AI, and protect Americans' privacy: Harris announced a series of new U.S. initiatives to advance AI safety and responsibility during her visit to the United Kingdom in November 2023. She has been working with the private sector and other governments to manage the risks posed by AI.

Significantly Shaped Legislation. Vice President Kamala Harris cast 33 tie-breaking votes in the U.S. Senate, which enabled passage of the Inflation Reduction Act and the American Rescue Plan, to name two of thirty-three key Biden-Harris administration achievements. All thirty-three Biden-backed nominations, amendments, or legislation would not have passed Congress without Harris’ vote.

Kamala Harris' accomplishments in the Biden-Harris administration reflect her commitment to justice, equity, and progress. Her leadership has been instrumental in addressing some of the most pressing challenges facing the nation, from public health and economic recovery to immigration reform and climate change.

If elected, President Harris would have continued the work needed, as described on her campaign site, to solve the most pressing challenges facing the nation and internationally, to assure American economic strength, and to pave the way for future generations of leaders.

Click here to learn about the planned policy agenda of the Harris-Walz Administration, if elected.

It’s not a partisan choice. It encompasses all other important issues, such as climate change, women’s rights, education, civil rights, worker’s rights, affordable healthcare, Medicare, social security, and more.

Our democracy is threatened by Project 2025 and Trump. If elected, Trump’s agenda will be based on The Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 (see below). Trump and Project 2025 supporters hide under the label “conservative,” but they are not conservatives: Their goal is to undermine our democracy and devolve it from striving for a more perfect union to an unregulated predatory corporatocracy (profit regardless of consequences), with theocratic (racist Christian nationalism) and oligarchic (billionaire class) oversight. This means you and I will vote in farce elections like in Russia or North Korea. We will lose basic protections under the law, such as clean air, water, and food, regulation of toxic chemicals, Social Security, due process, free speech, free press, and much more.

Our democracy is threatened by Big Money because corporations and billionaires influence elections with unlimited and undisclosed spending. They support a right-wing corporate agenda, which includes Project 2025 and could end our democracy, along with American rights and protections.

We can end the threat by gaining majority control of the U.S. Congress (51%, House and 60%, Senate; a Constitutional amendment requires 2/3 vote in both). We must elect Democrats who fight for working families, work to overturn Citizens United and reform campaign finance, restore Roe v Wade, and repeal the unconstitutional rulings of the U.S. Supreme Court, which essentially makes the President of the United States a monarch and puts that person above the law.

(click here to read U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders’ 2012 statement.)

If the survival of our democracy is important to you, this is your call to action.

First, check your voter registration (click here).

Then invest a little time to knock on doors to talk about the importance of electing Harris-Walz and electing Democrats for House and Senate, state and federal, up and down ballot in 2024.

Forward this link to your friends, post it on a blog, print it, hand it out, leave it at a cafe, tack it on a kiosk, run Facebook ads, or write letters to the editor. And please talk to people about voting for, if possible, progressive Democrats (key: they are funded with small donations from individual citizens, and they don't accept Big Money donors so they work for your best interests, not corporate agendas)

Take a stand and vote (elections calendar)! Help decide the future of your America. VOTE on November 5th, 2024!

If you’re undecided, because you’re a Republican or concerned about Kamala Harris, then please consider this: Voting in 2024 is not a partisan issue. It’s about saving our democracy, rights, and freedom. And many authentic Republicans, such as Liz Cheney, George Conway, Adam Kinzinger, Judge J. Michael Luttig, and many more are voting for Democrats in 2024. https://bit.ly/3zmXcIa, https://bit.ly/3TIEWzL

Let’s follow their lead and defend our democracy and freedoms. Let’s make America better for ALL Americans. It’s not a partisan choice. Stop Trump and Project 2025: Vote for Harris/Walz for President/Vice-President; vote for Democrats up and down the ballot

So let's assess the Biden-Harris Administration’s vs Trump’s results.

The Biden-Harris Administration produced results that benefit all of us

The Biden-Harris Administration (Biden-Harris) has achieved major results at home and abroad in only 3 years – results that benefit all of us—despite dealing with Putin’s unprovoked war in Ukraine; the challenging Israel-Gaza situation; ongoing obstruction from congressional Republicans and DINOs (Manchin and Sinema); and minimal, if any, reporting by the media on the Biden-Harris Adminstration’s achievements and successes.

Biden-Harris strengthened America, domestically and internationally; continues to strengthen our democratic republic, and working to unify the nation. The media irresponsibly under-reported the accomplishments of the Biden-Harris Administration, and virtually did not report on Harris’ significant many contributions, especially in the area of women’s rights, healthcare, and abortion.

Trump was ranked the worst president in U.S. history

Trump is four years younger than Joe Biden, but his “youthfulness” would be a horrible tradeoff for a man who could instigate an authoritarian takeover and undermine our republic and rule of law. Trump is a national security risk and disdainful of those who serve in the military. Trump would weaken NATO and align with dictators.

Moreover and most alarmingly, if re-elected in 2024, Trump is ready to base his presidency on Project 2025! The extreme right-wing Heritage Foundation, a “conservative” think tank has published a 1,000 page document called Project 2025 which supports Christian nationalism, a fundamentally fascist theocratic dictatorship. This will undermine our democratic republic, disregard the rule of law, bypass or reconstrue the U.S. Constitution, gut the EPA, and reject climate science, among many other heretical goals.

In 2023, Trump was convicted of 17 felonies, including tax fraud. In the E. Jean Carroll cases, he was convicted of sexual abuse and defamation. On February 16, 2024, Trump, his eldest sons and their associates were convicted on charges of conspiracy, insurance fraud and falsifying business records. Trump must pay more than $450M in penalties plus interest. Trump has been indicted for 91 more felonies in four pending cases and is likely to be criminally convicted for at least one, if not all, of these crimes which could result in a prison sentence.

Trump voices simple thoughts with his limited vocabulary—often incoherent, divisive, misogynist, racist, or xenophobic. There’s convincing evidence that Trump is a puppet of American right-wing billionaires (https://bit.ly/49h1KMW , https://bit.ly/48kWOFg) and a Russian asset (https://bit.ly/3uz5aeQ , https://bit.ly/3uvh4X4). Like a “mob” boss, he “leads” through threats and intimidation. With at least six business failures, Trump’s strongest skills are hype, instigating violence, telling Big Lies, and grifting. Trump is a loser.

Harris is key to ongoing strengthening of our economy and democracy

Let’s always remember that President Joe Biden’s Cabinet included Vice President Kamala Harris, expert heads of 15 executive departments, and each department consists of expert advisors—all combined comprised the “Biden-Harris Administration”. And Vice President Kamala Harris, next in line for the Presidency, has been a significant contributor to the most successful Biden-Harris Administration.

VPOTUS Harris has the experience to be POTUS, and she has high energy, high intelligence, sharp mental acuity, and rapid repartee. She’s lively, enthusiastic, and commanding. Harris offers competent continuity of executive success! And moreover, she will certainly attract support from women, regardless of color, from diverse ethnic groups, and from young voters. She’s a winner!

The Biden-Harris Administration’s and future Harris-Walz Administration’s policies are key to strengthening our democratic republic and our economy. Democrat-controlled congresses, state and federal, will get Big Money out of politics and eliminate the possibility of a takeover by criminals, a wannabe dictator, and Christian nationalists.

Read the details of Harris’ priorities, policies, and agenda that she will realize when elected President of the United States.

Vote for Harris/Walz for POTUS/VPOTUS and Democrat-controlled congresses, state and federal, up and down ballot.

Seattle Times, the Washington State Republican Convention in April 2024 “called for an end to all mail-in voting.” And it approved this resolution: “We oppose legislation which makes our nation more democratic in nature.”

Then in May, from reporting in the Centralia Chronicle, the Washington State Party and Mainstream Republicans of Washington filed a suit to prevent the attorney general from disclosing the potential financial impact of three ballot initiatives that would reduce state revenue by billions—money earmarked for public education and climate projects.

The national Republican Party approves the Supreme Court ruling in Roe vs Wade ending a woman’s constitutional right for reproductive freedom. They also oppose IVF procedures and contraception medications. They support Project 2025 plan to put into effect if their candidate Trump gets elected. BBC News explains a few key items on that agenda:

1. Proposes the entire federal bureaucracy, including independent agencies like the Justice Department, be placed under direct presidential control.

2. href="https://www.democratic-perspectives.info/p/the-story-of-the-culvert-kids-on?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email&utm_content=share&action=share">Share

I was in the Border Patrol for two years. I was a crane operator on the Fence Maintenance Crew in the San Ysidro Sector (from the Pacific Ocean to El Centro, California, 50 miles inland) on our southern border. The Port of Entry between San Ysidro and Tijuana is the busiest border crossing in the world. I saw many strange and shocking things, but there is one thing I’ll never forget.

Five large culverts were needed in a dry arroyo to drain flood water under the border fence into Mexico during rainstorms. This was in preparation for a 100-year flood event, so the culverts were quite large: six feet in diameter.

One day after we shut down for lunch, we were sitting around the head of the culverts when four children popped out of one with their dog, whose name turned out to be Daisy. Surprised and shocked, we looked at the Border Patrol agent who was sitting in his vehicle about 100 yards away. We were always guarded by another agent—he was there to ensure we were safe, that no groups of immigrants tried to rush through, and to make sure no one was smuggling. He didn’t move. Didn’t even roll down his window, so we chatted with the kids as best we could in broken Spanish and shared our lunches with them.

The days went by, and the kids started coming through every time the machinery shut down, and our lunches got bigger and bigger. One day we heard a woman calling, and Charlie, who spoke a little Spanish, went to the fence and spoke to her. It was their mother looking for them. He told her they were over on our side, but it was OK, he would send them back through. It turned out that they lived in a shack down on the Mexican side of the arroyo. Their father had snuck through and worked in construction up in Temecula. He would come home whenever he could for a visit and then sneak back to work.

I was sitting in the crane one day and gazed down at the shacks in the arroyo and suddenly realized that if the flood we were preparing for ever came, their little shack and all the rest would be washed away. If those had been my kids, I would have done anything to give them a better life or died trying. I now know that as long as people can find jobs and work here, no wall or fence is going to stop them.

If we are ever to solve the immigration problem, we have to recognize that most immigrants are just poor people looking for a better life. It’s going to take a thoughtful, bipartisan solution that allows guest workers, paths to citizenship, and some asylum. We can’t save everyone, but many citizens of this great country are descended from immigrants, and we have room for a few more. In fact, we need them as part of the solution for the Social Security funding problem.

The Statue of Liberty is one of our nation’s iconic and revered symbols. These words by Emma Lazarus are inscribed at her feet:

“Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

Those words still mean something.

It’s not a partisan choice. href="https://www.democratic-perspectives.info/p/another-huge-biden-administration?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email&utm_content=share&action=share">Share

May 13, 2024 marks another huge win for ALL Americans who use electricity, brought to us by the Biden-Harris Administration.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) announced a much-needed national grid expansion and modernization plan. While it will take a few years to build out, when completed, our modern national grid will have the capacity to serve the U.S. for decades to come, speeding our country’s progress toward a clean-energy economy.

Why is this important? Since 1900, the electric grid has grown organically without long-term national planning. As a result, some states experience rolling brownouts when power demands surge unexpectedly—a problem that’s becoming worse due to climate change and increasing power demands. Meeting this demand requires more grid-connected energy generators.

Nationwide, energy companies have proposed nearly 12,000 new energy generators in the form of wind, solar, hydrogen fuel cells, and utility-scale battery backup projects. Eighty-percent of these projects have been delayed, many for years, because of the limitations of our antiquated electric grid infrastructure, which can’t easily support the interconnection of these new energy generators. In some areas, grid transmission is at capacity, and no new generators can be added. For all other regions, the national grid’s capacity won’t meet the rapidly increasing demand for power projected for the next 20 years. Without these much-needed and overdue grid improvements, electrical power will become increasingly expensive in most areas, including Klickitat County.

The FERC plan resolves these issues. The plan requires that every few years, power demands will be reviewed to ensure that the grid is continuously improved and ready to meet future, changing power needs for the next 20 years. Ultimately, this grid modernization and expansion will keep up with demand while keeping consumer costs down.

This national power grid investment will benefit all Americans by 1) expanding clean energy generation and distribution, 2) enabling energy abundance, 3) and maintaining a relatively low cost of electricity. Furthermore, because so much of our production is dependent on electrical energy, lower electricity costs will also translate to lower food prices and lower cost of goods.

This successful step toward meeting U.S. citizens’ future energy needs with new, plentiful sources of clean energy is the result of Biden’s clean energy initiative and funded by Biden’s Infrastructure bill, which allocated $13 billion for FERC’s grid modernization program.

Share

Share Democratic Perspectives

Thanks for reading Democratic Perspectives! Why? Let me explain:

June, 2015, U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders very publicly warned us--and continues to do so today--that Trump is a pathological liar. August, 2017, 60,000 mental health professionals signed a petition stating that Trump was unfit for office. Rather than taking action on this professional assessment, the lead organizer of the petition drive, Dr. Bandy Lee, was fired from her position at Yale University because she invoked the “duty to warn” requirement for professional psychiatrists. Yale administrators believed she was just being “political”.

Congress members were warned by Lee and Sanders about Trump's psychiatric shortcomings. Democrats introduced a bill aimed at establishing a “commission on presidential capacity” . But Congress members concluded nothing could be done until Americans were informed and pushed Congress to act. Attempts to inform the public via the media were construed as just “politically motivated” and thus ignored.

By September 2018, given Trump’s instability cabinet members witnessed, there were early whispers of invoking the 25th Amendment and assert Trump was unfit to serve as POTUS. Assuming for lack of courage to invoke the 25th Amendment, Trump remained in office, and then further demonstrated his instability and unfitness for serving as POTUS by provoking the January 6th Insurrection.

By 2022, Dr. Bandy Lee was fully vindicated, but Trump continues to be embraced by MAGA Republicans, both voters and members of congress.

Despite so many long-term credible warnings about Trump, despite his now proven criminality and immorality, despite his disregard for the rule of law, despite his penchant for embracing dictators, and despite Trump contributing to Project 2025, a blueprint any right-wing POTUS, and despite so many character flaws—Trump's thin skin, faux genius, tiny vocabulary, man-child, big liar, big narcissist, big whiner, big misogynist, big racist, big crimes, worsening dementia, and big goal of undermining our democracy.

Despite all this, one would think, with so many defects, at least one or two would get through to his supporters and undermine their support.

I can't imagine why so many people ever supported him and still do. I can only imagine that Trump is the “flypaper president”. Unlike Teflon to which nothing sticks, anyone who whiffs Trump’s B.S. sticks to him like flypaper. I guess we're seeing in real time the effectiveness of the Big Lie and the ideas of "1984" in action.

What is it going to take to retain and strengthen our republic in 2024??

It’s not a partisan choice.
